YONEX-SUNRISE BWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009

WorldChamps 2009 LogoIts full steam ahead for the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Championships in August in Hyderabad with the unveiling today of the logo for the championships. The countdown has begun with all parties reiterating their commitment and support for the successful delivery of the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Championships 2009 in a press conference today.

Hyderabad is stepping up its preparations to welcome badminton’s best on 10-16 August. The championships will be played at Hyderabad's Gachibowli Indoor Stadium. Badminton Association of India president V.K Verma described Hyderabad as the most deserving city to host the World Championships in the country. “With players like Saina (Nehwal), Chetan Anand, Jwala Gutta and many more, Hyderabad is certainly at the forefront of Indian badminton,” said Verma.

“Therefore it is only fitting that Hyderabad play host to this prestigious event which will also act as a curtain raiser for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
India is the host of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi where badminton is a core sport on the Commonwealth Games program.

“The State government will provide all the necessary support to ensure the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Championships is organised well. The expectations are high (on Hyderabad), and we shall not disappoint,” said Radha, Andhra Pradesh Managing Director. “Whatever the requirements, the State government will ensure that they are implemented.”
Approximately 400 players from 50 countries will vie for top honours in five events at the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Championships with World No 1 Lee Chong Wei and China’s Olympic and world champion Lin Dan set to renew their rivalry in Hyderabad. Besides the duo, the other men’s singles players to watch out for are Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat, a hugely popular figure in India and Denmark’s Peter Gade.
Also present to witness Monday’s ceremony to unveil the logo were Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association (APBA) president K. Durga Prasad, APBA executive president T.G Vengkatesh, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh managing director V. Radha, SUNRISE Sports Ptd Ltd managing director D.K. Seth and India’s highest ranked women’s player Saina Nehwal (World No 7).
Saina was also presented with the Badminton World Federation’s 2008 Most Promising Player of the Year award.
